Students may request an insurance waiver if they are covered by an alternative insurance policy that meets the basic requirements of the UT Health Insurance Plan.
Review the following waiver eligibility categories to determine your eligibility and to learn about the process, including required documentation and submission deadlines.

Note: Graduate students with a benefits-eligible TA/AI assignment in the Spring semester are provided with UT Select staff health insurance for both the spring and summer semesters.
Students with benefits-eligible GRA assignments are given UT Select staff health insurance for only that semester in which the student is employed.
If the hiring department has not begun to process your assignment by the 11th class day of the semester (3rd class day during the summer), your waiver will be voided and you will be billed for the UT Health Insurance Plan.

Note: Dates of coverage must span the dates of the academic semester(s) for which you are requesting a waiver.

Spring: December 1st, 5 p.m. of previous year for new students who wish to waive pre-arrival insurance, 11th class day, 5 p.m. for new and continuing students.

Note: You must also attach proof of dependent coverage. Proof of dependent coverage may be obtained from the HRS Insurance website.

Graduate Student with Fellowship

Submit a completed Fellowship Insurance waiver request form to ISSS.

Note: Graduate students awarded with a competitive fellowship valued at $10,000 or more per year are eligible to purchase the UT group medical insurance plan (i.e. basic medical for the fellow and dependents, including dental and vision insurance).

How to Submit a Waiver
All students, excluding ESL and Sponsored, may submit their completed Insurance Waiver Request to ISSS in one of the following ways:

Submit a completed waiver by email, or send an email to the address below with "Complete Waiver Request Form" as the subject line.

Processing Time
Waiver requests may take up to two weeks to be processed. You may check to see if your waiver request has been approved by viewing your tuition and fee bill.
If you see insurance charges on your tuition and fee bill on the 11th class day (fall/spring) or 3rd class day (summer), contact the Insurance Advisor immediately.
