ISSS offers many services for our student and scholars. If you would like to speak with an advisor, please select the service below for information on how to schedule an appointment with one of our highly trained staff members. If you must miss your scheduled appointment or need to change it, please follow the instructions in your confirmation email.

The ISSS Front Desk is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Front Desk staff can assist with general questions and most document pick-up. H-1B employees must schedule an appointment to pick up documents.

Schedule an appointment with the Exchange Student Advisor only if you are on a reciprocal exchange from a partner university. Student interns and visiting scholars should make an appointment with a scholar advisor. For general questions, please email:

The Exchange Coordinator also has walk-in advising hours for reciprocal exchange students on Wednesdays, 3:30-5 p.m. at the International Office. No appointment is needed, just check in with the front desk. Walk-in advising begins the first week of classes and ends the last week of classes.

ESL International Student Advisor, Jessica Luhn, accepts appointments with students who are currently enrolled in the ESL program. Current ESL students may come to the ESL Services front desk (International Office, 2nd floor) during normal office hours without an appointment, to request the following:

  • Travel Signatures on I-20s or DS-2019s
  • Employment Verification Letter for social security numbers
  • Enrollment Verification Letter
  • ESL Transcripts & Grade Reports
  • Copies of Receipts or Tuition Payments
  • Signatures on Transfer-In Forms
  • Reprint of lost or stolen I-20s or DS-2019s

The ESL Advisor is available for walk-in advising during the semester in the ESL Classroom Lobby (811 W. 24th Street):

Sponsored Students are individuals who are funded by a government, company, or organization which utilizes 3rd party billing and have signed billing agreements with the International Office. The Sponsored Student Advisor assists with issues involving immigration, financial sponsorship and billing, general insurance and tax questions, and also advises students on questions related to academic progress and personal considerations. Sponsored students are encouraged to make an appointment, but can always email Tina Fiet, Sponsored Student Advisor, to suggest an alternate time that may be more convenient, and for general sponsored student questions.

Insurance Advising Appointments

Schedule an appointment with the Insurance Advisor to assist you with insurance-related matters. Please read the special considerations below before scheduling your appointment.

Special Considerations

  • Same day appointments cannot be facilitated.
  • UTEID and the reason for which you need to see the Insurance Advisor (e.g. to purchase dependent insurance; to discuss waiver options) is required.
  • Completed Insurance Waiver Request forms can be uploaded at Secure Uploader. You DO NOT need to make an appointment.
  • Insurance Waiver Requests may take two weeks for processing. Please do not make appointments to check the status of your waiver request. To check if your waiver request has been approved, view your tuition and fee bill. If you see insurance charges on your tuition and fee bill on the 11th class day (Fall/Spring) or 3rd class day (Summer), please contact the Insurance Advisor immediately.

Tax Lab

The International Office will be hosting Tax Lab every Wednesday beginning February 22, 2017 through April 12, 2017 from 10 AM to 12 PM in FAC 327.

Tax Lab is an opportunity for international students and scholars to complete their tax returns using GLACIER Tax Prep with a tax volunteer available for any questions that may come up during the tax filing process. Tax Lab operates on a walk-in basis and no appointment is necessary to attend. Be sure to bring the following to be prepared for Tax Lab:

  • 2016 income documents (Form W-2, Form 1042-S, etc.)
  • Passport number
  • History of entries and exits to and from the United States.

Tax Appointments

Volunteer tax assistance is offered by International Office staff members who have been trained to serve as IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) volunteers during the tax season. Our services are focused on reviewing the tax forms that you have already completed or answering questions that prevent you from completing your tax return.

  • Appointments must be made in order to meet with a volunteer. No walk-ins will be seen.
  • Appointments for the 2016 tax season are available February 23, 2017 through April 13, 2017 on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 4:45-6 p.m.

To schedule a tax appointment, the following must apply:

  1. You have already completed your tax return through GLACIER Tax Prep (GTP) and have printed & completed the tax forms to the best of your ability or
  2. You have a question that is preventing you from completing your tax return.

What to Bring:

  1. Your printed tax return forms that you have already completed via GTP, and
  2. Any income forms (Form 1042-S, Form W-2, etc.) and all other tax forms you may have received.

The filing deadline to submit 2016 tax returns is April 18, 2017.

Amended/Prior Year Tax Appointments:

Amended tax appointments are available if you need assistance filing a past year's tax return or correcting a prior year's tax return that has already been processed by the IRS. Appointments will be available from February 23, 2017 to April 13, 2017 on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 4-4:40 p.m.

You must bring the all the prior year's tax documents such as the Form 1040, Form W-2, Form 1042-S, etc. as well as any communication you received from the IRS with you to the appointment.

Please note that appointments cannot be made to review individual financial aid applications or to do an in-person interview for a financial award.

Please make sure to attend the mandatory OPT Workshop first. 

  1. Click on the 'Event' Tab at the top once logged in.
  2. Type in 'OPT Workshop' in the keyword search.
  3. Click RSVP for any available session

After you have attended an OPT Workshop you can schedule an International Student Advising-OPT Application appointment.
