ISSS offers many services for our student and scholars. If you would like to speak with an advisor, please select the service below for information on how to schedule an appointment with one of our highly trained staff members. If you must miss your scheduled appointment or need to change it, please follow the instructions in your confirmation email.

The ISSS Front Desk is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Front Desk staff can assist with general questions and most document pick-up. H-1B employees must schedule an appointment to pick up documents.

Sponsored Students are individuals who are funded by a government, company, or organization which utilizes 3rd party billing and have signed billing agreements with the International Office. The Sponsored Student Advisor assists with issues involving immigration, financial sponsorship and billing, general insurance and tax questions, and also advises students on questions related to academic progress and personal considerations. Sponsored students are encouraged to make an appointment, but can always email us at: sponsoredstudent@austin.utexas.edu, to suggest an alternate time that may be more convenient, and for general sponsored student questions.

Beginning April 23, 2019, Sponsored Student Appointments will be available at the following times:

1:30 - 3 p.m.
You do not need an appointment for the following services, but you do need to come in during Sponsored Student Walk-In Hours (Tuesdays 1:30 - 3:00 pm; Thursdays 9:30 - 11:00 am):
  • Travel Signature on your I-20 or DS-2019
  • Employment Verification Letter for social security numbers (must also provide written permission for employment from your sponsoring agency)
  • Signing a Q-Drop form (if you will still maintain full-time enrollment)

Schedule an appointment with the Exchange Student Advisor only if you are on a reciprocal exchange from a partner university. Student interns and visiting scholars should make an appointment with a scholar advisor. For general questions, please email: exchangeadvisor@austin.utexas.edu.

Note: Concurrent enrollment letters and change of major I-20s were offered as walk-in services in the past. Now:
  • Concurrent enrollments can be requested online at myIO. An advisor will process your request and send you an e-mail when it is available for pick-up at the front desk.
  • Change of major I-20s will now be printed automatically by the International Office. When they are available for pick-up at the front desk, you will receive an e-mail.
  • Travel Signatures on I-20s or DS-2019s
  • Employment Verification Letter for social security numbers
  • Enrollment Verification Letter
  • ESL Transcripts & Grade Reports
  • Copies of Receipts or Tuition Payments

Schedule an appointment with the Insurance Advisor to assist you with insurance-related matters. Please read the special considerations below before scheduling your appointment.

Special Considerations

  • Same day appointments cannot be facilitated.
  • UTEID and the reason for which you need to see the Insurance Advisor (e.g. to purchase dependent insurance; to discuss waiver options) is required.
  • Completed Insurance Waiver Request forms can be uploaded at Secure Uploader. You DO NOT need to make an appointment.
  • Insurance Waiver Requests may take two weeks for processing. Please do not make appointments to check the status of your waiver request. To check if your waiver request has been approved, view your tuition and fee bill. If you see insurance charges on your tuition and fee bill on the 11th class day (Fall/Spring) or 3rd class day (Summer), please contact the Insurance Advisor immediately.

Tax Lab

Dates: Every Tuesday and Wednesday, February 26, 2019 - April 10, 2019

When: 10 - 12 PM

Where: FAC 327

Tax Lab is an opportunity for international students and scholars to complete their tax returns using GLACIER Tax Prep with a tax volunteer available for any questions that may come up during the tax filing process.

Tax Lab operates on a walk-in basis and no appointment is necessary to attend. Be sure to bring the following to be prepared for Tax Lab:

  • 2018 income documents (Form W-2, Form 1042-S, etc.)
  • Passport number
  • History of entries and exits to and from the United States. A travel history is available from the I-94 website as a guide.

Tax Appointments

Volunteer tax assistance is offered by International Office staff members who have been trained to serve as IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) volunteers during the tax season. Our services are focused on reviewing the tax forms that you have already completed or answering questions that prevent you from completing your tax return.

  • Appointments must be made in order to meet with a volunteer. No walk-ins will be seen.
  • Appointments for the 2018 tax season are available February 27, 2019 through April 11, 2019 on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 4pm - 6 PM.

To schedule a tax appointment, the following must apply:

  1. You have already completed your tax return through GLACIER Tax Prep (GTP) and have printed & completed the tax forms to the best of your ability or
  2. You have a question that is preventing you from completing your tax return.

What to Bring:

  1. Your printed tax return forms that you have already completed via GTP, and
  2. Any income forms (Form 1042-S, Form W-2, etc.) and all other tax forms you may have received.

The filing deadline to submit 2017 tax returns is April 17, 2018.

Schedule a tax appointment by following the instructions below:

  1. Log into MyIO
  2. Search and click the date of event.
  3. Select a time slot that suits your schedule.
    • If no slots fit your schedule, please consider attending Tax Lab for assistance.

Amended/Prior Year Tax Appointments:

The International Office and Volunteer Tax assistance are unable to assist with Amended Taxes and have limited support for Prior Year Tax Returns.

Nonresident aliens for tax purposes who have failed to file a prior year tax return may have options on GLACIER Tax Prep. You will be able to access blank tax forms to fill out on your own or purchase access to GLACIER Tax Prep prior year software to help fill out the forms.
