Financial Requirements

Students planning to attend UT in F-1 or J-1 status must request a Form I-20/DS-2019. Upon being admitted, students will receive a welcome email from the International Office with instructions for using myIO. This online system will be used for submitting financial documentation and other information needed to issue the Form I-20/DS-2019.

When requesting the Form I-20/DS-2019, students must provide proof of sufficient funds to cover the estimated expenses for their first academic year of study as outlined below. While there is no specific deadline for students to submit their financial documents in myIO, this information should be submitted in a timely manner to initiate the I-20/DS-2019 issuance process.

Funding Support Documentation Guidelines

Documentation for all sources of expected funding must be electronically uploaded and submitted via myIO. Documents submitted via mail, email, or fax will not be accepted. The following guidelines must be met when submitting financial documentation:

  • All funds must be liquid
  • Issued within the last 12 months
  • Written in English or accompanied by an English translation
  • A Letter of Financial Support must be submitted when funding will be provided by an individual (e.g. relative, family member, etc.) other than the student.
Statement(s) should include name of bank account holder, date of issuance, type of account (e.g. checking, savings, certificate of deposit), total available account balance held by the account holder, official bank name and address by means of a logo or a heading. Please note that only bank summaries are reviewed. Bank transactions histories do not need to be submitted.
On original bank letterhead, letter should include bank name, address, bank official printed name and title, bank official original signature, bank seal, account holder’s name, type of account, current amount in account, currency type, and date of issuance.
Upload copy of award letter in myIO.

The sponsorship letter (also commonly known as a financial guarantee letter or Terms of Appointment) should be on official letterhead and issued by the sponsoring entity, most commonly a government, company, or other organization. If your primary funding is from one of these sources, you may be classified as a sponsored student at UT. This letter must confirm the details of your sponsorship, including amount of tuition coverage and living stipend, or total amount of award provided. To find more information regarding specialized billing and services for sponsored students, please visit the Sponsored Student Service page.

Please note that a bank loan is not considered sponsorship.

Letter must show that student is approved for loan.

If source of funding will be provided by an individual (e.g. relative or friend) other than the student, a letter of financial support must also be submitted. The letter must include bank account holder’s full name, relationship to the student, amount and duration of support, account holder’s original signature, and date letter was signed. A financial support letter template can be found here.
