Ready to get started on your career teaching English abroad? Here's what you need to know.

  1. Apply: Send your application including 'pre-interview task' to celta@austin.utexas.edu. You will be contacted within 3 weeks for an interview. In-person interviews are possible for applicants in the Austin area. We also conduct phone/Skype interviews. Information disclosed in the application must be complete and accurate, including any circumstances that may affect performance on the course.
  2. Interview: Attend the interview, either in-person or on the phone/via Skype. The interview typically lasts about 40 minutes. Within 72 hours, you should receive an email with the results of the interview. If you are accepted, you will be sent an acceptance email with possible course selection. You will also be sent two pre-course tasks. These tasks are homework assignments that must be completed before the first class day.
  3. Reserve your spot: Pay a $300 deposit reserving your space on the course of your selection. It is important to reserve your space early as spaces fill up quickly. Also, if you are not a UT affiliate or alumnus, follow the instructions on your acceptance letter to obtain your UT EID and send us your ID. Your full payment is due three weeks before your course start date.

Acceptance onto the University of Cambridge CELTA course is not automatic or guaranteed. Applicants must satisfactorily complete the tasks and pass a subsequent interview to be accepted. Non-native speakers of English must be able to demonstrate that their level of English, both spoken and written, is suitable for the demands of the course. The decision of the center is final.

Applicants who have satisfactorily completed the pre-interview task will be invited to attend an interview shortly after this date at the school or on the telephone if the candidate is not based within Austin. Skype can also be an alternative option to avoid long distance phone call costs.

Successful applicants will receive an offer of a place on the CELTA course immediately if there is a place available.

A $300 non-refundable deposit is required to hold your space in the course, and the remaining tuition amount by three weeks before the first class day. You may obtain a full refund (minus the deposit) two weeks before the start of the course, but after that day, there is no refund. In cases of emergencies, we allow you to withdraw from the course and use your tuition for a course at a later date. In the event that the course is canceled due to low enrollment (5 or fewer students), you may defer to a later session, or request a full refund, including the deposit. We will notify applicants at least 2 weeks in advance if a course is canceled.

An independent assessor appointed by Cambridge comes near the end of each course to consult on grades. Each student is awarded either a 'Pass,' a 'Pass B,' a 'Pass A,' or in some cases, a 'Fail.' 'Pass B' and 'Pass A' are not analogous to the American system of 'B' and 'A,' and a simple 'Pass' is considered very good.

If the candidate receives a 'Fail' grade at the CELTA Center in Austin, the result cannot be changed and the course fee will not be refunded.

The CELTA Center in Austin requires 100% class attendance, in addition to work outside of scheduled contact hours. As a result, absences, tardiness, or incomplete or late assignments may compromise grades on the course.

The University of Texas at Austin CELTA Center accepts applications from non-US citizens to our program. You must be able to provide proof of your English ability within the C1-C2 level on the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) scale if English is not your native language.

International students admitted to the UT CELTA Center will need the following additional paperwork for visa documents. Photocopies, faxes, or email attachments are acceptable; we do not require original or official documents. If you are applying for an F-1 or J-1 visa, please keep your original financial guarantee statement for your visa interview.

International applicants will also be required to:

  • Provide a copy of the photo page of your passport

  • Provide a financial guarantee statement (usually, a personal/family bank statement)

  • Provide your foreign address

  • Pay the $200 SEVIS fee

  • Arrange a visa interview with their local US consulate

  • Purchase health insurance through The University of Texas for the duration of their course (unless they provide proof of a private policy which meets or exceeds university requirements).
