Salvador, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is one of the most beautiful cities in Brazil. This 500-year-old city was built atop spectacular beachside cliffs that overlook the tropical coastline. Salvador is rich in Afro-Brazilian traditions, and the month of June comes alive with many traditional celebrations featuring local music, food and religious festivals.
Students choose from three tracks of Portuguese courses totaling six credit hours. Dr. Orlando Kelm teaches Afro-Brazilian Culture. All other courses are taught by local professors from the Associacão Cultural Brazil-Estados Unidos (ACBEU), a prestigious language school and cultural center. The program’s unique learning environment offers guest lectures, guided excursions with local experts and a homestay experience. In addition, students participate in service learning projects with community based non-governmental organizations.
ACBEU’s centrally-located Victoria campus boasts highly-qualified teachers, small teacher-to-student ratios, an art gallery, a theater, and provides quick access to the many cultural points of interest in one of the world’s most historical cities.
